Help a Sista Out

Recently I've started becoming obsessed with reading blogs on motherhood. It all started when I happened upon Design Mom. I was in my second trimester, in complete nesting mode, and found this awesome website dedicated to design and motherhood. It's written by Gabrielle Blair, a mother of five who somehow manages to maintain a household and a growing blogging empire. What struck me most was that she seems so organized and unhurried in how she lives her life. I am always struck by how "in the moment" she lives her life and how much she enjoys and values her time with family and friends. I was instantly hooked on reading her blog daily and then began reading her family and friends' blogs.

I think the thing that I appreciate the most about these women's blogs is that they approach their lives with a sense of joy and appreciation for the everyday, and completely revel in the moment (my tendency is to revel in sarcastic complaining and to just "get through the day"). Their blog entries serve as a great reminder to treasure interactions with those you love.

These women also take "homemaking" and "motherhood" to a new level. Just reading about what these women do each day makes me feel exhausted. But I really like how, rather than letting the day's ad hoc events dictate their schedules, they are great at planning events and thinking consciously about how they want to live their lives. I'm always amazed by the cool dates they plan with their husbands and the amazing activities they accomplish with their kids. Granted...none of them works outside the home. But I am sure that having five kids at home is WAY harder than my job.

After I started reading Design Mom, I started reading her sister Jordan's blog. Her sister lives in San Francisco so it's cool to get a little local flava flav.

Then I started reading NieNie. NieNie is a friend of Design Mom and has an absolutely beautiful family of four kids in Arizona:
In a (very) roundabout way, I wanted to make this post because I learned a few days ago that NieNie and her husband were in a terrible private airplane accident and that they're both in critical condition. For some reason (and maybe because I'm super hormonal), I've been totally obsessed with this story and have just felt overwhelmed with sadness by it. NieNie just so clearly loves her life and her family so much, it's such a shame.

OK...Maudlin Ashlyn will now take a break. But in the meantime, check out NieNie's blog. And if you feel compelled to donate to NieNie's recovery, you can do so here:

Finally, Design Mom will be hosting a silent auction to help their family on Thursday, August 28th. I hope that Design Mom will accept some of my silent auction donations! And if you have any cool things to donate, visit her site to participate.
