My Hubby's a Butt Man

I asked Kris what he was up to the other day. His answer?

"I'm drawing rectums!"

Kris just started a post-doc at Berkeley where he's developing robot-assisted techniques for treating prostate cancer through the use of guided needles. He's working on simulations which show how robots can be used to precisely target treatment for the prostate, thereby minimizing collateral tissue damage. Hence the rectum drawings.

So. Just thought I'd let y'all know. In case you ask him how he's doing, and he doesn't explain why he's so into drawing rectums.

I will write about how wonderful and awesome and amazing you are. I will write the post with sincerity, humor and goodwill. C'mon, I am desperate! And I am FAILING this auction!

Silent Auction to Benefit NieNie

Hello all,

You may have read my post a few days ago about NieNie and her husband Christian, who were in a terrible plane accident recently. They are currently in induced comas (and are expected to remain so for the next few months) while they undergo serious surgery, skin grafts, etc., for treating their multiple burns. In the meantime, they need our help in supporting their four children and their household. So, I'm joining Design Mom in hosting a silent auction today. All proceeds will go to the Stephanie and Christian PayPal account.

How this silent auction works:
1) Please place your bid by leaving a comment with your Bid Amount and the Item Number you are bidding for (very important!) in the comments section of the item you are bidding on, along with contact information. Check the comments to see the most recent High Bid.

2) Following the close of the auction, I will contact the winner (make sure your comment bid includes an email address or link to your blog or some way to contact you). The winner will pay the amount of their winning bid to the Stephanie and Christian PayPal account. The winner will then respond to the email by forwarding the PayPal receipt and providing a mailing address. I will then mail the item to you.

3) Please bid in increments of whole dollars. The auction will end at Midnight PST on Sunday, August 31, 2008.

4) Thank you for participating!

Who Am I?

I am one month old.
I am fussy when I am not cuddled or fed.
I wiggle my toes so much that I tore a hole in the bottom of my footed pajamas.
I live by one rule: If you just laundered it, I will poop all over it.
I am learning to smile, and I have two dimples.

I AM SAYA!

Couples - Get Inspired!

Last month, two books were published by long-married couples who had sex - get this - every day for a year, and every day for 100 days, respectively. They viewed it as a challenge to jump-start their love lives, remember how to appreciate each other intimately, and to reconnect at the end of a day.

The New York Times published an article on these couples here.

It sounds like a good idea, in theory. I like that these couples make a conscious effort to prioritize intimacy. Although...one woman forced her husband to have sex during a terrible bout of vertigo...maybe taking it too far?!

Just a shot in the dark, but I think Erin and Dave would DEFINITELY be up for the task. Tag - you're it!

Planning for Fall

I am busy plotting my entry into the World of the Fabulous. After nearly a year of feeling frumpy and fat and pregnant, I am so excited to go shopping. Usually I go shopping with Maryn because I do not have Fashion Confidence. She refers to me as "Grasshopper" because I am basically her clueless trainee. Recently, I've made a few purchases without Sensei Maryn because I. Am. Desperate.

Here's what I've purchased so far:
1. Citizens of Humanity black skinny jeans (yes. I FINALLY caved to the skinny jean trend).
2. RayBan aviators

I also fell in love with this amazing black leather fur hoodie thing by June but it was $385. Let me know if you want to buy it for me. Heh.

I am also loving this vest by Free People and these boots - perfect for tucking skinny jeans into for fall, am I right?

I've also decided that my fashion idol is Rachel Bilson. I love how she layers things and pulls them together with the perfect bag, belt and/or shoes. Check out how cute she is!

The Chronicle of Saya, Part 2: Labor

Saya is now one month old! In honor of this milestone, I thought I'd post an "uncensored" story of the labor.

It all started on Wednesday, July 23rd. I know that I will probably go into labor soon, so I call my mom to ask her exactly how she had felt when she was in labor. True to form, my mom's memory of the events are hazy and all she tells me was that "it felt like bad period cramps." I start getting worried that I won't even know if I am in labor.

That night, I make Kris go to Safeway and buy all the things I need for the labor, and we go to bed around midnight. I start to feel kind of crampy. Every ten minutes or so, I have a contraction with some mild "period cramp" type pain. But it isn't bad. For the next couple of hours, I keep wondering "Is this labor?" I doze off and on until around 3:30 a.m. but by then, the cramping is annoying enough (and just painful enough) to keep me awake.

From 3:30 - 5 a.m., I feel intense contractions lasting 10-15 seconds, about 8-10 minutes apart. They become so painful that I do not know what to do. In our living room, I try squatting on the floor to relieve the pain. The only thing that seems to help is when I get on all fours on the couch, pound my feet as hard as I can, and wiggle my butt in the air (so sexy). I try my Lamaze breathing exercises and realize in about 0.00002 seconds that they are useless.

I decide to Google "signs of labor." I read that when many women go into labor, their intestines revolt and clean themselves out before the birth process. Sure enough, at around 5 a.m., I run to the bathroom for a long, intimate session with the Porcelain God. I am in there for about 45 minutes and feel some intense pain. I start to think that maybe I am ACTUALLY in labor, but am also thinking that maybe I'm a wuss and just uber-sensitive to pain. The mucous plug and bag of waters are still intact and I'm hoping these are not simple Braxton-Hicks contractions.

At 7 a.m. I am in a ton of pain and contractions are between 4-5 minutes apart, lasting 10-20 seconds. My OB told me to go to the hospital when the contractions are three minutes apart for at least an hour, lasting for a minute each, so I think I still have a lot of suffering ahead of me.

I run into the bedroom between contractions and wake up Kris. He offers to stay home from work. Stupidly, I tell him "No, go to work! If thing get worse, I'll call you." Five minutes later, I tell him "Call the doctor immediately! Stay home from work!"

Kris calls our doctor's office and asks them to page the OBGYN on call. We wait...and wait. Half an hour later, we call again and ask them to page the doctor. Then we wait some more. After 45 minutes elapse, we call the hospital. The hospital tells us to come to Labor and Delivery! Kris quickly packs up the car and we drive to Stanford Hospital. On the way there, the doctor on call FINALLY calls us back and says "Oh, you should go to Labor and Delivery." Gee, thanks.

Kris drops me off at the front of the hospital and I walk to the hospital checkin. I ask the attendant where the Labor & Delivery unit is. The attendant looks at me skeptically and asks "Are you even IN labor?" I have no idea why this is such a shock to him, as I am ONLY NINE MONTHS PREGNANT.

At L&D, I go through the laborious checkin process while standing up. The staff there are so used to women in labor that the fact that I am in extreme pain does not faze them at all. While I attempt to remain calm through contractions, they ask me to sign papers, fill out forms, etc. I am finally admitted to an evaluation room, where Kris joins me.

My usual OB is out of town. Luckily, the OB who takes her place (and who gave me a checkup two days earlier) is a seasoned old guy who's delivered 6,000 babies. He comes in the room and finds that I am now dilated 2 cm. I am happy (because I wasn't dilated at all two days before) but also frustrated. All that pain for only 2 cm?!

The doctor tells me I am in labor but I have awhile to go. He suggests I either go home or walk around the hospital for awhile. This sounds like the worst thing EVER to me. Then he turns to me and asks "You DO want a natural birth, right?" I respond "NOOOOO!" Then he says the magic words, "Oh! Well, in that case, let's admit you. Let's see about having your baby today."

The emotional impact of that statement sends me into instant tears. I can't believe it's finally happening, and that I will meet my baby today!

Then, more magic. The nurse asks if I would like an epidural. For some reason I am under the impression that epidurals are not administered until 4-5 cm dilation. I ask her whether I have to wait. She says, "No! Epidurals are for pain! If you are in pain, we will get one for you!"

Within the hour, I am checked into a clean and spacious delivery room, strapped to a fetal heart and contraction monitor, and have an IV in place.

Next up: The delivery room and birth!

I Heart Rocky Road

So. Have I mentioned how much I love Rocky Road? I ate about six scoops a day during my last month of pregnancy. And that amount has not really decreased, despite my not having the ol' pregnancy excuse anymore.

Six days before Saya was born, I had the following Gchat with Kris:

6:36 PM Kris: im coming home now!
do you want me to get anything?
6:37 PM me: yayaya my baby :)
i'm watching extreme makeover: home edition
it's like emotional porn for pregnant women
i can't stop crying
Kris: jeez
me: how about some rocky road ice cream?
Kris: ok maybe ill work a little more
me: it would just take it to that next level, you know?
Kris: i dont know if i can stand it
me: haha
6:38 PM i miss you, come home to me!!!
Kris: we have vanilla, chocolate, coffee, and some berry ice cream
me: i want to smother you with kisses
NO
ROCKY ROAD
Kris: wow
6:39 PM me: wow huge contraction right now
Kris: your anger is making you give birth
me: ROCKY ROADDDDD
the reason why they call it that is because if you don't buy it for your prego wife, then you have a rocky road ahead of you
6:40 PM Kris: youre gonna have a rocky road if you keep acting like this
me: oh no....
6:41 PM Kris: ok so you want butter toffee ice cream?
me: ha
Kris: ok ill come home
me: k :)
Kris: bye!
6:42 PM me: bye!

New Saya Pics

Thanks to Rishi for posting these new pictures of Saya!

Notice how Roshan is playing hard-to-get in these pictures. Somehow I feel that he is learning these skills from his uncle Ajay. Saya is staring at him, and he couldn't care less. All he wants is a bottle.

Fast-forward twenty years and the story will probably be the same. Just replace "bottle" with "Bud Light."

Happy 30th Birthday, Rishi!

Why AERA is like Ross Dress for Less

I've had an exceptionally interesting day. After feeling like a zombie for the better part of the week, I've entered a new phase of motivation. I've stopped feeling sorry for myself and pitying my perpetual state of exhaustion, and am instead envisioning myself as a a productive, "get-things-done" kind of gal. I owe this new positive mindset to a few things.

First, I've started meditating. I know! So new-agey! So not pragmatic me! But having a few key goals for the day (which I think about and which help me through the day) has been helpful in keeping me focused on what needs to get done, and not focused on factors (like my exhaustion) which could keep me from doing them.

Second, I've had a few conversations with Kris and Bronwyn about personal narratives. This is sort of like meditation, in a way. It's also a topic covered in Stephen Gilbert's "Stumbling on Happiness." Basically, it's kind of a circular reasoning that goes something like this: if you want to be a particular type of person, you should envision yourself that way (by narrating your life to others that way), and then you will become that type of person. Apparently having some sort of personal narrative is a huge predictor of happiness.

After a long morning (and part of the afternoon) of Not Focusing, I employed my new techniques of meditative goal-setting and personal narration. I then attacked some work. I multi-tasked like a madwoman. I pumped two breasts while reviewing three proposals for the 2009 American Education Research Association (AERA) conference.

AERA is a lot like Ross Dress for Less. You can find quality stuff, but you have to dig through a ton of crap to get to it. I've seen the worst presentations ever at AERA (on, like, postmodern French women's literature from the 19th century or something like that), and some of the most enlightening/amazing presentations there (like, brilliant panels on cost function estimation or closing the achievement gap). It's fascinating.

I just reviewed three proposals for the Fiscal Issues SIG. One was terrible. One was so-so. And the third renewed my faith in research! Amazing!

And then I realized I was sitting on a sheet that Saya pooped on. I need to add "being aware of surroundings" to my daily goals.
