Foodie Friday in Hawaii

Check out these three gangstas. The "M" is for "Matsumoto's Shave Ice"!

Our last days in Hawaii were filled with food, food, and more food. Friday was an exciting foodie day. We made our way over to the original North Shore Giovanni's shrimp truck for lunch.

Most of us ordered the original shrimp scampi, which was a delectable plate lunch of twelve garlicky, buttery shrimp served in the shell with two scoops of garlic rice.

Maryn ordered butter and lemon shrimp. Kris bravely laughed in the face of the "No Refunds" sign accompanying his hot & spicy shrimp...which are boiled in hot sauce, and then covered with chilies and more hot sauce.

We watched him sweat through his meal. After, Kris looked like he was wearing lipstick, his lips were so swollen:

We shared a coconut drink:

And admired our coconut head...

We finished the meal with chocolate haupia pie from the legendary Ted's Bakery. It's basically a chocolate pudding pie topped with haupia (almost like a coconut gelatin) and whipped cream:

Next, a trip to Byodo-In temple...

...and Pali Lookout...

..and dinner on the sand at Ola at Turtle Bay, where we had an appetizer platter of Kalua pork and goat cheese "nachos" (served on wontons instead of chips), ahi cakes, and soft shell crab...

...Misoyaki butterfish...

...grilled octopus with pasta...

...and lilikoi cheesecake.

Quite the romantic meal. Like most restaurants with a stunning ocean view, the food was good, but not amazing. BUT. We ate with our toes in the sand, got tipsy, AND my parents watched the baby. In other words, it was fabulous.

Hawaii Update

Last Sunday, Kris and I made a mad dash down to Southern California to avoid a snow closure in the Grapevine on Monday (when we were supposed to leave). It was super stressful leaving a day earlier than we planned. We left our apartment in disarray and weren't able to get everything done that we'd hoped.

On Tuesday, there was more stress...flying to Hawaii with Saya, my parents, my sister and Brian at the crack of dawn. The plane was boiling hot and we were seated next to two other babies. One baby was an angel and did not make a single peep. Our baby was not that baby. There was screaming, crying, whining the ENTIRE flight. And the third baby was a copycat crier who screamed every time Saya screamed. What this meant was that I basically had to breastfeed for three hours on the plane to keep her quiet. No napping for me! I would have paid maybe $200 to be able to be the smug parents of the quiet baby.

Once we landed, though, I witnessed a complete baby transformation. It was like Saya (like the rest of us) decided that she was in her true element in Hawaii. Who wouldn't be happy chillin' in 80 degree weather with only a diaper? (P.S. I know of at least one psychotic astronaut who would be super into it).

We drove up to the Oahu North Shore to Haleiwa town.

We were starving and my parents finally pulled up to Kua 'Aina hamburgers. I was like, "Burgers? We drove all the way here for burgers?" But let me tell you. These burgers were sooo amazing. I ate a 1/2 pounder all by my lonesome. So well-seasoned, and juicy!

I love the vibe on the North Shore. It's less touristy and way kick-back. Lots of locals just hang out and there is a very strong barefoot culture. It seems worlds away from the craze of Waikiki, with tons of tacky tourists from the Mainland, and label-obsessed visor-wearing tourists from Asia with their Chanel purses.

We got settled in our rental house. Beautiful, and right on the beach.

I took the best nap of my life on the lanai, which has this amazing view:

Saya and I shared a bath in the whirlpool.

The chub was in full swing:

On Wednesday we hung out at the house, went shopping in Haleiwa and went to the famous Matsumoto Shave Ice for shave ice with ice cream and azuki beans. For dinner we went to a relaxed Thai restaurant and had pineapple fried rice, mango salad and fried coconut ice cream.

On Thursday, we braved crazy Oahu traffic and went into Honolulu so I could get my hair chopped off. We tried mochi creams for the first time. Decent, but not mind-blowing.

That night, we had a very relaxed grilled steak dinner back at the house. Stay tuned for our weekend update!
