A Perfect Day

Today was my 29th birthday. And it was awesome.

(Except for this morning, when my mother (personal angel) left to fly back home to L.A. I miss her already.)

Kris, Saya and I had big plans for a day in Indianapolis. Our first stop? Traderspoint Creamery, a local dairy and maker of milk, yogurt, ice cream and cheesy goodness. I've been wanting to go for a long time...especially since Marsha found out that one of their cheesemakers trained with our all-time favorite Cowgirl Creamery. (Oh by the way, Marsha also sent us three fabulous Cowgirl cheeses, which I am eating as I sit here writing this...thanks Marsha!)

Anyway, Traderspoint is super cute...it's a working organic farm/dairy, with super cute barns, super happy cows (and we all know good cheese comes from happy cows), chickens, and their own restaurant! Seriously, you have to take a look at their website. It's just so cute and chic.

First, we stopped into one of their barns, where they hold a Saturday morning farmer's market.

This wasn't your average farmer's market. It was unbelievably cozy. Wine tasting, really really good people playing live music, pumpkin bread, organic turkeys from a local farm, and little teensy baby sheepdogs (seven of them!) running around the place. It was from the heavens.

We walked around the farm a little bit.

Saya was fascinated by the chickens (seen here, roosting under their coop):

We met some baby calves.

And fed them hay.

After, we went inside their larger barn and sat at their Dairy Bar (seriously, how cute?). We figured we'd kick the day off with milkshakes (with coffee ice cream blended with chocolate milk) and some caramel ice cream. It was an awesome first meal.

Then we had lunch at their Loft Restaurant. I had the Traderspoint burger (stuffed with bacon and spicy cheese) and Kris had the Cuban sandwich.

Next, we stopped off at Meridian, a mid century modern furniture haven in Indianapolis. Kris and his colleague Selma are actually getting a house (a house!) on campus to house their robotics activities, and would LOVE to outfit it with cool vintage and mid century furnishings (including all the vintage robot stuff we can find!). It's a very cool concept. They're going to call it R House, with is just too awesome.

Next, we strolled through the Mass Ave. shopping district while Saya napped for an hour and a half (score!). The weather was just amazing...cool and crisp, and not a cloud in the sky. We stopped by a few cute stores and then went absolutely nuts buying stuff for Saya in Mass Ave Toys. They have all sorts of really cool, wood German toys that are super high quality and chic looking. We ended up buying her Christmas present there...this awesome wooden Educo play kitchen. You can't tell from the picture, but it's an awesome birch wood with lime green and orange accents (our favorite color combo and our wedding colors!). We also got her a set of wood play food, a set of wood pots/pans/cooking tools, and a very cool wood food and beverage set from Plan Toys (a favorite in the wood toys department).

We also bought Saya a little tent to play in. My mom, who has awesome Saya intuition, said Saya would loooove to have a tent.

Saya woke up right as we ended our shopping trip. We headed over to the Indianapolis Children's Museum, where we spent two hours hanging out. We played. Saya rode her first carousel. It was good times.

After, we drove over for an early dinner at Abyssinia, an Ethiopian restaurant in Indy. I cannot describe my love of Ethiopian food. I love everything about it. I love, love, love the sourness of injera. I love that it's warm and spicy comfort food. And I love ordering sampling platters so I get to taste a little bit of everything. To my deep, deep sadness and horror, the one Ethiopian restaurant in Bloomington (which I CRAVED nightly, people!) just closed. So this was a treat.

Saya digs injera. Word.

Saya and I slept during the drive back from Indianapolis. Back at home, we set up and played and played with the new tent. Kudos to mom for the idea. It was a HUGE hit.

Kris passed out, and I gave Saya a bath and put her to bed. Then I watched an episode of The Office while drinking Diet Cherry Coke and eating Marsha's triple cream Mt. Tam cheese from Cowgirl Creamery.

Today I didn't even have to use my A.K.
I got to say it was a good day.

Fall

The fall is already over here in Bloomington. We had a few short weeks where everything was golden: golden yellows, oranges, and reds. I was so happy my family got to see it during their visit a few weeks ago.

Now it's time to hunker down for winter. Amazingly, it's still warm here - almost 70 degrees, lovely and clear.

It's raking season here in Bloomington...
