Bananas in Pajamas!

On December 3rd, we hosted a Bananas in Pajamas birthday party for yours truly. We had an Easy Like Sunday Morning themed party to celebrate my birthday...at night. We're night owls, so ACTUAL mornings are never a time to celebrate.

Don't you think that brunch should be served at all times in the day, including night?
(P.S. If your answer is no, maybe we shouldn't be friends).

At some point on December 1st, we realized that we were expecting 30 people. And we hadn't done menu planning or grocery shopping. And I was still recovering from a breast infection (fever, chills, severe boob pain!) that put me out of commission for the entire weekend.

I presented the following menu to Kris:

Tartine gougeres
Tartine spinach quiche
Scalloped potatoes
Cheese-egg souffle
Sausages
Crostini with goat cheese, walnuts and honey
Crostini with strawberries and balsamic reduction
Brioche crostini with rum-buttered glazed pineapple and vanilla mascarpone
Crostini with bacon, figs and gorgonzola
Smoked salmon & creme fraiche with dill & lemon on rye bread
Pear and blue cheese salad
Cinnamon bread
Homemade pear pop tarts
Rum Raisin Bread Pudding
Vanilla bean ice cream

Drinks: Mimosas, bloody Mary's, Martinelli's and lattes

And this is what I love about Kris. Instead of screaming "ARE YOU INSANE?!" He responded, "I don't think this menu is difficult enough. Why don't we ALSO make coffee-braised short ribs to go with the coffee-at-brunch theme?" And so he did! Kris ended up making almost everything the day of the party, and timed everything beautifully. The party was a smashing success! Everyone got to wear their pajamas and had a great time. Thank you baby :)

Happy 30th Anniversary!

On December 9, 1978, Mark and Viv (my parents!) got married:

Then they honeymooned in Hawaii:

And on Tuesday, they will return! With the entire family! I can't wait!

Run With Me

I am now officially obsessed with running. I love it. I mean, I don't looove it while I'm doing it...it's definitely sweaty and painful. But I feel so great afterward. I feel proud of myself right after finishing a run, and I swear the endorphins last all day!

After the first 5k I ran a few weekends ago, I ran the Torrance Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot 5k while pushing Saya in her stroller. It was great! I felt awesome after. I finished in 36 minutes exactly. A little slower than my initial non-stroller 5k time. But I actually think I ran faster on Thanksgiving...it's just that there were so many people, I couldn't really start jogging until a quarter mile into the race, because the lanes were full of people and I couldn't maneuver past them with the stroller. (As an aside...I've never seen so many hapa kids in my life as I did at that Turkey Trot. I felt right at home!)

For my early Christmas present and as a reward for finishing the 5k training, Kris bought me these New Balance running shoes, with arch support inserts AND an iPod armband. They are heaven. And for $140, you too can enter the pearly gates. I didn't know what I was missing before I wore these shoes. I'd had my prior running shoes for - umm - ten years, if you can believe that. So, needless to say, they were worn out. I told my dad it was like eating SPAM for ten years and then having a filet mignon. It was a night-and-day difference.

Anyway, I highly recommend buying shoes at a New Balance store. They have an awesome staff...super friendly and helpful, and they analyze how you walk, take all sorts of foot measurements, look at your arches, and make sure your fit is podiatrist-approved. I ended up buying shoes a full size up from what I normally wear, because I didn't realize there is supposed to be a full fingertip width at the front of your shoe. Now it makes sense why my toenail beds hurt after running in my old, too-small shoes. Heh.

Of course I bought the pink running shoes. And of course Kris said "Of course the pink ones are gonna fit you better, just because you NEED the pink shoes to fit you better." Of course!

Now I've started training for a 10k, which I plan to run on Saturday, January 31 in San Diego...one of the only places holding a 10k in California next month. There aren't a lot of 10k's (it's a weird race length, apparently). So because my training schedule ends that day, I thought...what the heck? I'll just go down to San Diego! I'm planning to run this race. If you are in the O.C. or San Diego area, will you consider running with me? So far I have three friends up here training for it (they're not going to San Diego, but they are still training). Kris and my dad might try to run it with me. And Miguel is definitely on board.

Come run with us!

If you're a novice runner, try the 9 week Couch-to-5k training program. The training schedule is here. And you can download nice world music podcasts to go along with the training schedule here, or download rap/hip hop podcasts here.

To train for the 10k, I'm modifying the training program for this 13 week Couch-to-10k training program (which Daphna did a few years ago). I thought a 13 week program would be too short, and I'm afraid of injuring my knees, so after finishing the Couch-to-5k program, I decided to start from week 5 of the Couch-to-10k program. So all-in, I'm spending a total of 9 additional weeks to train from going from a 5k to a 10k. I'm in the middle of week 6 of the 13 week Couch-to-10k program right now...make sense?

Leave a comment if you're on board with joining us for the 10k! If we have enough folks participating, I'll plan a fun, beer-fueled lunch after or something.

Turkey Day Update, Two Weeks Late

On Thanksgiving, we had a big family brunch. My mom's classic cheese egg souffle played center stage. What could be better than a souffle made with cheese, bread, and eggs...unless it is topped with bacon? And let me tell you. It was. It most definitely was.

Sydney and Anson enjoyed brunch with my mom. As you can see, my little baby girl cousin (whom I used to pretend was MY baby) is all grown up and has a full-grown boyfriend. Sigh. Makes me feel old.

Not to brag or anything, but I think this photo serves as evidence that Saya is already a foodie. Note the attention paid to Ina Garten's latest cookbook:

What else happened? Chillaxin with Uncle Chris, Taylor and Sydney:

Significant time and energy was devoted to giving cupcakes the appreciation they deserve:

Later that night we had another feast at Kris' parents' house. First up: a pomegranate, pear and blue cheese salad:

Then, rack of lamb with a mustard crust...

Then, Moroccan couscous, mashed potatoes and steak:

And brussel sprouts with bacon:

Brussel sprouts are making a comeback! I saw Barefoot Contessa do a Thanksgiving episode featuring them, and Michelle also made them for Thanksgiving (read about her crazy and amazing Thanksgiving menu here...just don't ask any questions about how it all got done with a toddler and a newborn). My verdict on the brussel sprouts? I'm not sure why people are so into them. I think they're OK. They definitely give off the "I may make your pee smell weird later" vibe. And the middle tastes like the stalk of a broccoli. Not my favorite. Although...top anything with bacon, and it's pretty much GAME ON for me.

As amazing as the dinner was, I was sad to miss out on the dinner that Maryn made with my mom. You can read about it (and drool) here. Stuffing with figs, onion, brandy, pine nuts, rosemary, and crispy sausage, in a turkey roulade? YOU BETTA ASK SOMEBODY!

Birthday Update

In the last month, I spent a good two weeks celebrating my birthday. I got some great gifts. This year's theme was upgrading. I need to upgrade a lot of things in my life, including (but not limited to) my home, my research, my belongings, most of my clothes, and my head/body shape.

Wardrobe upgrade? Check! My parents gave me three great tops and my in-laws gave me a cute necklace from J. Crew.

Home upgrade? Check! Kris' grandma gave me some awesome canvas magazine butlers from West Elm, and Kris got me a set of new, ultra-soft bamboo towels that I have been eyeing for a long time. (Our towels were really gross looking because Kris uses benzoyl peroxide, which bleaches out all of the color...these new towels are white, so no more questionable stains! Yay!) And my in-laws also got me a swanky set of scented dishwashing liquid, hand soap and hand lotion from Restoration Hardware, with matching dishtowels. Maybe it's a hint to clean more?

Lifestyle upgrade? Check! Marsha gave me Barefoot Contessa's new "Back to Basics". And Maryn got me a SIGNED copy of Giada de Laurentiis' new cookbook with some Laura Mercier hand cream.

Now my sister, my mom and I each have a signed copy of the cookbook:

Also: two more foodie adventures. My in-laws took me out to an awesome sushi restaurant. We ate monkfish liver with caviar...yum!

And my sweet sister Maryn baked a ton of Giada's strawberry cupcakes. So Cute and So Fluffy and Sweet and Good! We all had a little party in our mouths.

I still need to do more body upgrading. I am thinking of renting Pilates videos from the library. I want to do important things, like grow a butt. Because I am shaped like an hourglass that doesn't have curves or go in in the middle. In other words: like a board.

In other news, I went to the grocery store this weekend and had to buy shoyu because I didn't have any. As a Japanese girl, the first emotion that came to me when I realized this was deep shame. And I felt the need to apologize to my mom. Sorry, mom!

A Note from Special K

Ain't no woman that can take your spot: my love!

Hi sweetie pie! I'm so sorry about this stupid internet connection. It's really frustrating.
So a summary of my day:
- I dressed like I was going to a wedding (white shirt, black pants). Someone even commented. But that guy looked like Gallagher, so whatever!
- Missed you
- Chatted with Ankur
- Missed Saya
- I had good mexican food for lunch! Fried fried fried stuff with good salsa, cheese, and guac.
- Missed you
- Jean-Claude was being cranky about the quality of the presentations. One of the guys was legitimately terrible.
- Missed you
- Went to the banquet, where I had boring conversation with folks. Found out that only 5 people were hired in robotics in the last 2 years. Decent food and strong "crema tequila".
- Missed Saya
- Practiced my talk a couple of times.
- Missed you
I'm so sad without you! I can't wait to go home. You are my life! I love you so much and I can't wait to hold you in my arms and feel your body so close to me!

Weekend Update

On Friday, Mr. Joe P. Robinson became Dr. Joe P. Robinson. How did we celebrate? Ethiopian!

After his successful dissertation defense, Joe got a little over-confident and decided to challenge Marsha to a bake-off...using Splenda. No he di-in't! He tried to put the smack down with his injera:

Then, that night at 3 a.m., my darling baby (the big baby, not the little one) left our cozy little bed and headed off to Guanajuato, Mexico, for a conference. From what I can tell from our static-laced phone conversations, he has been eating fish with lime cream sauce and walking down uber-narrow "kissing streets". Without me.

So Saturday was spent as a single mother (i.e., doing the hardest job in the world). I was overwhelmed from the second I woke up until the second I fell asleep. Kris is so good with Saya, and so patient, and so helpful. I rely on him so much that I seriously can't function without him.

Saya is super well-behaved when Kris is here. She's not as well-behaved with me...it's like she knows if she cries, she can get a boob. So she basically cries constantly unless I'm either holding her or breastfeeding.

Before I had Saya, I thought I would be able to detach myself mentally from the baby's crying, so I could put the baby down, ignore the crying, and get stuff done. Now that she is here, I absolutely cannot stand it when she cries and I find it impossible to block out her crying. I think it produces a hormonal stress response in the mother or something. Other babies? Let them cry away! But I get so stressed out listening to my own baby, I feel distraught. And since it renders me incapable of doing anything else, I end up just giving her what she wants. And then I tell myself it's okay because she's very little and needs to be close to me. But it is extremely emotionally and physically exhausting to carry/nurse/sing to/entertain her all day long.

After ten hours of a baby who doesn't want to nap longer than 15 minutes, cries/fusses constantly, constantly needs to be carried, and does not allow you to perform basic tasks or bodily functions (you try folding laundry, doing dishes or peeing with a 14-lb. wiggling baby strapped to your stomach in a Baby Bjorn!) I honestly felt like I was on the verge of a nervous breakdown. First I went on a run with Saya. Then I carried her to Trader Joe's and lugged two heavy bags of groceries back. Then I carried her to Safeway and lugged more heavy groceries back. Then I gave her a bath while she screamed (she usually LOVES taking a bath!). I had trouble finding the strength and time to take a shower, eat, and go to the bathroom. When Marsha showed up to make oyako donburi and bake some shortbread, I felt like I was completely broken. I hit the wall and was thinking thoughts like "Should I have had a baby? I clearly can't handle it". Then Saya continued to cry for the next 3.5 hours until she finally fell asleep. I had zero patience or coping ability left and then felt guilty for resenting her.

This morning was better. I woke up before Saya and was able to get ready before she woke up. Then I strapped her into the carseat and we headed up to San Francisco to meet up with Marsha (again!) at PPQ Dungeness Island for lunch. I had the #15 (vermicelli with pork bun and imperial rolls with nuoc mam) which I had been dying to try. It was decent, and a great deal at $7.50. It was not as good as Bong Su (where we had our wedding) but we sued them (and won!) for overcharging so we can never go back (sniff). It was also not as good as our favorite Vietnamese place on Polk, but last time we went there, Kris found a worm in his food so we can never go back (sniff). (As you can see, finding good Vietnamese food can be a dramatic and emotional process).

After lunch, we took a field trip to Heath Ceramics in Sausalito, which produces some of the most gorgeous dinnerware ever. Marsha is obsessed with their stuff, and rightfully so. They provide the dinnerware at Chez Panisse and Slanted Door. I found some amazing coffee mugs that met Kris' exacting specifications and Marsha started a collection of Chez Panisse dinnerware!

We ended the evening by attending Monica, Rishi and Roshan's charming Cookie Exchange. The real highlight of this sweet event, though, was Monica's savory pulled pork. Saya was mostly cute, but fussed a lot (as you can see from Doreen's pictures) and only napped a little bit. I realized that I was (1) still traumatized by yesterday and (2) maybe should not have been socializing in public because I was too strung out and my censor button was turned all the way OFF. I think I made a few people feel uncomfortable.

Example conversation #1:
Rishi's B-school friend: So, what's it like to be a mom?
Me: Exhausting. And overwhelming. I don't think I'm cut out for this.
Rishi's B-school friend (looking uncomfortable and giving me a look that says "I am concerned about your mental health"): Oh, well, have you asked Monica for any tips?
Me: I don't know if Monica's experience is like mine. I think Monica is, um, good at this. Like, she enjoys her life right now. Sometimes I wonder if I should have had a baby. Because I'm having a hard time coping and I don't think I'm good at being a mom.
Rishi's B-school friend (looking horrified and in need of escape): Oh.

Example conversation #2:
Pregnant woman: Tell me how you're doing now! I can't wait for pregnancy to be over with! How did everything go with your labor, etc.?
Me: Um, my girl parts are broken.

I realize that these conversations were totally overly-confessional. And I want you to know that I am aware that they are. It was like I just had this bizarre compulsion to vent and could not stop the self-doubt from spilling out of my mouth.

After we left, Saya screamed for an entire hour as we drove home.

But now, my beautiful baby girl is sleeping peacefully in bed after a cuddle, some kisses, a book, and belly button tickles. And she is amazing and adorable and I am so totally in love with her.

Let's see how tomorrow goes when I'm also supposed to be working all day. If you are reading this and know how to babysit, yes, this is a cry for help.

@ 4.5 Mos.

Saya is now 4.5 months old. Her fascinating life involves:

1. Learning to sit (see Exhibit A above)

2. Hangin' with the grandparents and great-grandparents:

3. Riding on shoulders:

4. Putting feet in mouth:

5. Deep contemplation of the crisis in the Middle East:

6. Eating paper:

...and bananas and rice cereal...

...oh yeah, and Auntie Maryn's cupcake frosting:

7. Turning over:

8. Shots in both thighs:

9. Turning pages in a book (yes, she actually does this):

10. Being in the 95th percentile for height (how did that happen)?
