Various and Sundry

Apparently, the uncontrollable urge to perch feet on Kris is a trait inherited from yours truly.

Pink hoodie = instant street cred. Am I right?

I don't look like someone who would spend the day emotionally manipulating her parents.
Or Do I?

Bathtime is one of the few times I take a break from emotional manipulation. I've taught my parents how to play a fun game called "Throw Spaghetti Against a Wall and See What Sticks."

There is nothing to fear but fear itself:

The best Halloween card ever from Auntie Maryn. What's not to love about fuzzy ghosts?

White on white:

The new hoodie. What appears to be the remnants of something gross in the background is actually the remnants of something amazing: Food & Wine Magazine's Green Chicken Masala. Try it, you'll love it. Kris cooked the chicken per-fect-ly.

Here is the chicken dish prior to consumption. Definitely make this - it's quick and easy, and it's the perfect one-pot dish to eat all winter long...

...along with the Lamb Tagine.* Which is not quick and easy, but is totally satisfying and makes about 5 servings. Score another for Food and Wine!

*Served with the Barefoot Contessa Moroccan Couscous. Which is out-of-this-world and super easy to make.

The Small Fry Visits the Big Apple

This is my first post, mainly because I enjoy Kris's writing so much that I don't want to ruin the blog's charm. But since I've been in New York City for eight days and I missed him terribly, I thought I'd post this as a surprise for him.

I flew to NYC on Sunday to attend the annual meeting of the American Education Research Association (AERA). Besides attending some cool sessions on school segregation, I was able to spend time with some great friends. I stayed with my fantastic friend Erin, who is now a rock star Assistant Professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder. We gallavanted around town with our dear friend Marsha, and were joined for a night by Gayle, who basically only came to present her paper at AERA because we scored Babbo reservations (a girl's gotta have her priorities, right)?!?! We also had the pleasure of hanging out with Dave, Erin's husband, who flew in from Berlin. It was a great AERA trip, with some key culinary highlights:

1. Trying to locate the best cupcakes in NYC with Marsha
2. Eating a pork bun at Momofuku
3. Discovering the best pizza I've ever had at a random place in Times Square. The crust was crispy and beautiful!

Pork buns and ramen at Momofuku:

I also had cocktails with my too-fabulous-for-words friend, Saimah, who is interning with Zac Posen. How cool is that?

After a few days in Times Square, I moved my luggage to Camilla and Ramon's place in the Bronx. Camilla was my first roommate ever! We lived together during a summer program at Harvard. We managed to also visit my friend Ed in New Haven, who is a fancy schmancy economics professor at Yale. We had a fantastic time hanging out together.

Here are some pictures of Ed's new condo in New Haven, which used to be a church bell tower!

Many thanks to Erin, Camilla, Ramon and Ed for hosting me!

Happy birthday to me...

Today's my birthday! Ashlyn got me a video camera so we can film the labor! Just kidding, that would horrify her. Over-the-shoulder shots only.

We went out to a nice dinner at the Village Pub in Woodside. Isn't Ashie looking cute in her dress? Look at that bump!

So, apparently during pregnancy, you're not supposed to have cured meats. So naturally, we go straight for the charcuterie platter. Mmmm... potted meats.

And instead of having anything "gourmet", Ash goes for the burger.

By the time dessert came around, I was stuffed! So rather than get some kind of cake or pastry dessert, we ordered one hot chocolate, marshmallows, and chocolate chip cookie dessert. This made it a little hard for them to put in the candles. Notice the one measly candle in the marshmallow.

I couldn't stop rubbing her tummy the whole night! Isn't she the best?
