Weekend at the Beach

Dave Suss surfing at Carlsbad

It's been a long time since my last post. Rather than bore you with the details of how I've gone into a black hole of crazy, I'll instead regale you with tales of our fabulous weekend at the beach a few weekends ago.

At the tail end of our trip to L.A., we packed up and headed down to Carlsbad for a weekend of fun with Erin, Dave, and Marsha. On the way, we stopped at Andrew and Michelle's beautiful home in Aliso Viejo, where we visited with their adorable daughter Cati and baby Trajan (three months younger than Saya, yet quite the solid little boy and about the same size)! Despite his appearance as a future USC football player (and warriorlike name), Trajan was surprisingly chill - a super relaxed, happy baby. Love it!

Cati was just amazing, and SO verbal! It was very impressive, and very cool to see how quickly development happens in year two.

Michelle is a total domestic goddess. First, her house is spotless. Second, when we arrived, she had wine chilling, served us her amazing homemade spanikopita, and was marinating shrimp to grill for us. Third, the food was so freaking good that I was deathly afraid that I might (1) visibly slobber or salivate during conversation, (2) say goodbye to all niceties and scarf more than my fair share, or (3) kidnap Mishy so she could serve as my own personal chef. It was a great visit, punctuated by a wonderful goodbye from Trajan:

See Michelle's post about our visit at the very end of this blog post.

We moseyed on down to Carlsbad to meet up with Erin, Dave, and Marsha. Such an amazing weekend! My parents were sweet enough to let us use their house for the weekend (i.e., let me kick them out of their house for the weekend), AND babysit Saya at times...so I did feel a little guilty that they ended up staying at a motel near Benihana. Please, do not judge my actions.

Marsha and Erin were coming down from being rock stars at AERA (they were in it to win it). Friday night, we enjoyed wine, amazing spiced nuts and honey (courtesy of Marsha) and crab cake sandwiches at Pelly's. And hello, hot-tubbing afterward! Yeehaw!

Saturday, Dave went surfing with my dad at the crack of dawn, while the rest of us sleepyheads hung out at the house. We had a lot of work to do: sunbathing, reading magazines, and eating.

Saya busied herself by eating sand. Which ended up everywhere:

Meanwhile, Kris and I escaped the major sunburns that Erin, Dave and Marsha sustained (I have to say...Erin suffered the most). Marsha found that slathering Noxzema onto sunburns really helps! Who new?

We only had time left in our busy schedule for things like In-N-Out burgers, more eating spiced nuts and honey, more magazine reading, sunbathing, cooking, eating, and going in the spa. I know. It was...tough. We made some awesome prosciutto-wrapped grilled asparagus, grilled shrimp (trying to evoke Michelle), and ribeye steaks on Saturday.

It was a fantastic, fun, relaxing weekend with our favorite people. The perfect ending to our week of "fake" vacationing.
